Tiredness in Pregnancy: You’re Not Alone

Pregnancy can bring an entirely new level of fatigue that may leave you wondering if you’ll ever feel rested again. From the first trimester to the third, it’s not uncommon to experience extreme exhaustion that makes even everyday tasks feel like an uphill battle. And this isn’t just physical tiredness – it’s a deep, all-encompassing fatigue that can leave you struggling to get through the day.
So, why is this happening? The reasons are both physical and hormonal, and it’s no surprise when you think about the amazing work your body is doing. From the moment of conception, your body is growing not just a baby but a whole new organ – the placenta – to sustain that tiny life. This incredible organ is responsible for so much: it provides oxygen, nutrients, removes waste, and creates hormones for your baby’s growth. And you’re doing it all!
It’s no wonder that so many mamas experience exhaustion in those early months. The good news is, once you enter the second trimester, you may feel some relief and even experience a lovely pregnancy glow.
However, just when you think the tiredness is over, it can come back during the third trimester. Your baby is growing and taking more energy from you, plus all those midnight trips to the bathroom don’t help either.
So, What Can You Do to Combat the Fatigue?
Rest When You CanIt might sound obvious, but when you’re tired, the best thing you can do is rest. I know this isn’t always easy, especially if you’ve got other children, work, or life responsibilities, but it’s essential to listen to your body. Rest as much as you can.
Take Prenatal VitaminsTaking the right multivitamins is a great way to support your body. I swear by Floradix liquid iron formula – it’s packed with nutrients and gives you a nice pick-me-up. It’s also a great option if you’re breastfeeding.
Note: If your iron levels are low, check with your doctor or midwife before taking supplements.
Prioritize Your To-Do ListYou don’t need to do everything at once! Prioritize what really needs to be done today, and don’t be afraid to let the rest wait. If the laundry or dishes aren’t done, it’s okay! If you’re working, be sure to take breaks, and if possible, sneak in a catnap to recharge.
Get Some HelpEven if it’s just for a few hours, getting help can make a world of difference. You could hire a cleaner, order a takeaway, or ask a friend or family member for support.
Eat Well and Stay HydratedMake sure you’re eating balanced, nutritious meals with snacks in between. Avoid sugary snacks that can cause a crash later. Staying hydrated is just as important – dehydration can sap your energy, so drink plenty of water throughout the day. And limit your caffeine intake, as it can leave you feeling jittery and drained.
Gentle ExerciseIt may sound counterintuitive, but gentle exercise like yoga or pilates can help you manage tiredness. Yoga (which I love so much that I’m training to be a teacher!) is great for your mind, body, and spirit. It helps prepare your body for the physical demands of pregnancy, labor, birth, and beyond.
Pregnancy can be physically and emotionally draining, but with these tips, you can give yourself the rest and support you need to feel more energized. Keep in mind – you’re doing something amazing, and taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your baby.
Let me know what worked for you or if you have any other tiredness tips to share. You’ve got this! 🌸
